Seoul Climate Card: A Complete Guide

Korea International School

Planning a trip to Seoul? Whether you’re visiting for a few days or settling in for a longer stay, chances are you’ll use a lot of public transportation.

That’s where the Climate Card comes in. Seoul’s all-in-one unlimited transit pass for subways, buses, and even public bikes.

Similar to the Tmoney Card but designed for commuters and eco-conscious travelers, the Climate Card offers unlimited rides within Seoul for a flat monthly fee.

But what exactly is the Seoul Climate Card, and is it worth it for you?

What Is Climate Card?

Climate Card is a prepaid transportation pass that offers unlimited rides on buses, subways, and Seoul’s public bike system, Ttareungi.

Unlike the Tmoney Card or paying by credit card, the Climate Card lets you ride as much as you want within your chosen package without worrying about daily fares or transfer fees.

Climate Card Costs

The Climate Card offers different plans you can choose from, depending on your needs and the duration of your stay:

Short-Term Climate Card Passes:

1-day pass – 5,000 KRW

2-day pass – 8,000 KRW

3-day pass – 10,000 KRW

5-day pass – 15,000 KRW

7-day pass – 20,000 KRW

These are perfect for tourists or anyone visiting Seoul for a few days who plans to ride the subway or bus frequently.

Long-Term Climate Card Passes:

  • 30-day Climate Card
    62,000 KRW (regular transit only)
    or
65,000 KRW (includes Seoul’s public bikes, Ttareungi)

NOTE: using the public bike access requires a local Korean phone number. If you don’t have one, we recommend choosing the regular 30-day pass instead.

Regardless of which package you choose, all Climate Card plans allow unlimited rides on buses and subways during the valid period.

It is also important to know that you cannot change the type of card until the expiration date, therefore whether the Seoul public bike (Ttareungi) is included cannot be changed either.

Where to Buy the Climate Card?

You purchase your Climate Card at any convenience store (GS25, 7-Eleven, etc.) or at a customer safety areas located inside Lines 1-8 of the Seoul Metro.

You can purchase the Climate Card in cash only for 3,000KRW.

To recharge or choose your package, you can go to any metro station machine, using cash or a Korean credit/debit card.

For further information about reloading you can check the official website of Tmoney and Climate Card.

Climate Card Usage

Climate Card can be used only within Seoul. If you’re staying in Seoul and planning to travel a lot during your stay, then this might be the best option for you.

To use the Climate Card, you need to tag it on when you enter the bus or the subway, and tag it again when you get off.

Don’t forget to tag off to avoid extra charges! Not tagging it when get off, might result in losing up to 24 hours from your package.

If you plan to travel outside of Seoul, even if your trip begins in Seoul, be aware that you do need another kind of payment method. The Climate Card simply wouldn’t work if you try to tag it on a bus that goes outside of the City.

Climate Card & Public Bikes

If you do own a Korean phone number and decided to purchase the 30-day-package including Seoul’s public bike (Ttareungi), this is what you need to do to connect your card to the bike-sharing app:

  1. Register Your Card Online by going to the T-Money Card & Pay website and sign up as a member and register your Climate Card details.
  2. Set Up the T-Money GO App. Download the T-Money GO app, log in, and register your Climate Card number (Your card has a 16-digit code on the back, starting with 1032).
You can only register your card one hour after adding funds to your Climate Card, so don’t worry if you can’t see the option immediately!
  3. To activate the bike Pass, use the two-hour bike pass available in the T-Money GO app.

After completing these steps, you can enjoy unlimited bike rentals throughout Seoul using your Climate Card.

Unexpected things happen and sometimes our plans don’t go exactly as we expected them to. Luckily, it is possible to get a refund for the remaining amount on your Climate Card in case you need to.

Although the amount you paid for the card itself is non-refundable, you can still get back a refund for the remaining balance. This is how it works:

  1. Refunds have to be done within the period of use of your Climate Card, and before the Climate Card expires.
  2. Go to a subway station reload machine (Lines 1-9, Ui-Sinseol Line, or Sillim Line) and scan your Climate Card, then select the refund option (Stop Card Use).
  3. Visit the T-Town Customer Center (1st floor, Seoul City Tower, 110 Huam-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul).
  4. A staff member will check your card and have you fill out a refund receipt (passport may be required).
  5. Return to the center after 3 business days to receive your refund in cash.
