Braai is the South African word for barbecue, but for South Africans, it means much more than that. Wikipedia says, “braais are social events which are casual and laid-back, where families and friends converge on a picnic spot or someone’s home.” That’s exactly what it feels like at Braai Republic.
Walk into Braai Republic and two things stand out immediately: the open kitchen to your left with a huge barbeque pit grilling away and to your right its the massive zebra pelt covering the wall. You know immediately that this place is most certainly not vegetarian friendly.
You will most likely be greeted immediately by one of the owners — Roddy, Chris or Louis. If not you’ll be met by some of the friendliest staff in town. The personal touch is certainly what makes you feel like you’re walking into someone’s home.
The interior is almost all wood. The standing tables are shaped like wooden casks and topped with a massive naturally-shaped wedge of a tree. Most of the tables are high-tops, giving it a bit of a bar-type atmosphere, but there are four normal sit-down tables in case you want to bring the family.
If it’s your first time at Braai, the Meat Platter is a no-brainer – if you’re not eating alone anyway. Two lamb chops, 2 different bangers, creamed spinach, garlic potatoes, and coleslaw.
Meat pies are another specialty at Braai — not to be missed. Whether it’s Chicken or Lamb, you won’t be disappointed. For those looking for a real authentic experience, try the Lamb or Oxtail Potjie, which is lamb shank or oxtail stew with potatoes, carrots and pap.
