Who Will Be Korea’s Best Female Rap Star?

Mnet presents another sensational season of Korea’s only rap competition for female MCs, Unpretty Rapstar. The show attempts to discriminate true rappers from the wannabees by putting the eleven participants through a series of competitions where they perform live, engage in diss battles, and star in one-take music videos. With the intense pressure, sometimes catfights ensue creating even more competition.

Compared to the previous season, this season seems to be receiving more attention as a number of K-pop idols are participating. Featured in the season are Yubin of Wonder Girls, Hyolyn of Sistar, Yezi of Fiestar, and Jiyoon of 4Minute. Viewers can expect fiery competition amongst the four and seven other underground rappers.

As it is with many K-music competitions, avoiding elimination isn’t enough. These rappers will have to ace it on the stage in order be chosen by a prominent producer to work on a track in a compilation album. In the previous season, producers Verbal Jint and Jay Park of AOMG were featured and the rappers they picked are already hitting the top of the music charts.

If you’ve already seen an episode, you’ll know that the title Unpretty Rapstar is very misleading, as all the female rappers are stunning. The drama, however, can get ugly. It is Mnet after all and drama keeps it interesting. If you like Hip Hop, or the Korean equivalent, or just want to get a glimpse of female K-rappers, try watching Unpretty Rapstar every Friday at 11:00 pm on Mnet.
