Words by Courtney Garcia: 6 Speakeasy Bars in Seoul to Drink Cocktails in Style
From the outside, Volstead, unlike other speakeasies on this list, is not hard to find (there’s a sign) yet still remains pretty unassuming. Located on Itaewon’s main street, you’ll head down into the basement to find a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere complete with vintage posters and old retro-style furniture. Named after the 1919 National Prohibition Act that sparked the creation of speakeasies, Volstead serves up well-priced cocktails like the unusual Lynchburg Lemonade and classic tonic.
From the Volstead Facebook page:
The Volstead Act (National Prohibition Act) prohibited the manufacture, transport, export, sale or possession of alcoholic beverages in the United States between 1919 and 1920. Though thankfully short-lived, it had a long-lasting impact on American culture – especially it’s cocktails and parties.
The Prohibition Act led to the birth of classic American cocktails, finger foods, the Great Gatsby, and of course, the romantic and mysterious speakeasies.
Volstead in Itaewon serves up made-to-order original cocktails, as well as the classics.
Whether your night is winding down or just beginning, come on by and enjoy Volstead, a cozy lounge, exuding a wistful hint of the decadent Roaring Twenties.
