Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), located in Ulsan, South Korea was established in 2007 and opened in March 2009. The university has an undergraduate program with 11 schools with 23 tracks, a graduate program with 16 programs, two professional graduate school programs, and one specialized graduate program. Yonghoon Lee has been UNIST’s president since November 2019. 

Admission

A total of 4,729 students attend UNIST with 2,879 undergraduate students and 1,850 graduate students. 

For international students who are looking to apply to UNIST, one must have a completed high school degree before their first fall semester at UNIST. A person qualifies as an international student if neither of their parents is a Korean citizen and if they have never attended a school in Korea. The application begins with submitting personal documents such as personal statements, transcripts, and recommendation letters. An evaluation is made based on those documents which will result in a rejection or acceptance. If accepted, a required interview is the next step in the process. Scholarships

The average scholarship per student is 6,222,600 KRW.

As an international undergraduate student, tuition fees are waived depending on these conditions:

  • 12 credits per semester are acquired
  • Full tuition waiver if GPA is 2.0 or above during freshman year 
  • Full tuition waiver if GPA is 3.1 or above, half tuition waiver if GPA 2.7 or above from sophomore year onwards.

There are three types of UNIST Scholarships: Global UNI-Star scholarship Gold, Silver, and the Global Dream Scholarship. The selection criteria for the Global UNISTAR Scholarship is awarded to an international Olympiad. Gold receives 630,00 KRW per month with a meal plan and Silver receives 330,000 KRW per month with a meal plan. The UNIST dream scholarship plan is 130,000 KRW per month and a meal plan. Also, upon arrival, students receive 500,000 KRW as one-time financial aid.

Campus Life

There are approximately 3,000 students who live on campus

There are 9 dormitory units as of January 2019, and they can accommodate a total of 3,870 students. Students also have access to laundry rooms, cafeterias, a swimming pool, and more. 

The UNIST library is a four-story building that houses 190,000 volumes of books, more than 10,000 journals, and 20 databases in Science and Technology. The library is also a resource for students who are participating in research.

Ranking

Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology has the goal of being ranked within the world’s top 10 science and technology universities by 2030. The strategies to accomplish this goal include IR-based student-centered discussion classes, all courses conducted in 100% English, an expansion of foreign professors and students by 20%, require students to complete two or more areas of concentration, and more.  

As of 2019, UNIST was placed in the 201-250 category in the World University Rankings.
