Hwansan Sunim graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in The Comparative Study of Religion in 1987. He ordained as a Buddhist monk at Yonghwasa Buddhist monastery in Incheon under Seon Master Songdam in 1990. He has been trained in Seon Buddhist meditation for more than 20 years and has been Seon Master Songdam’s personal attendant for the last 10 years. He has recently been charged with the task of transmitting Seon Master Songdam’s teachings to an international audience.
Seon Master Songdam is the most respected Seon Buddhist meditation master in Korea. He was ordained under the legendary Seon Master Jeonkang at the age of 20 and immediately undertook a vow of silence that lasted for approximately ten years and culminated in his enlightenment. He has been the master of the community of lay and monastic practitioners at Yonghwasa for nearly forty years and his teachings on Seon meditation and enlightenment are universally acknowledged as the epitome of modern Korean Buddhist spiritual expression.
Seon Master Songdam teaches Seon meditation techniques as they were originally transmitted from China centuries ago, but his teachings are expressed in modern terminology for contemporary practitioners. So whether you just want to learn more about Korean culture, are interested in meditation for its therapeutic and healing benefits or want to gain spiritual insight into the meaning and nature of human existence, this is a rare opportunity to encounter the teachings of a true enlightened Korean Buddhist master.
