Hee-Sung Keel (Professor Emeritus at Sogang University) will do a lecture on “Understanding Korean Buddhism” at the Seminar Room (2nd floor) of the Seoul Museum of History. Along with Confucianism, Buddhism has played an essential role in shaping the moral and spiritual life of Korean people for more than a millennium and half. Understanding Korean Buddhism is therefore indispensable for an adequate understanding of Korean society and culture, traditional or modern. This lecture will start with a brief introduction to basic Buddhist philosophy, followed by a broad survey of the Korean Buddhist tradition with special attention to its characteristics and spirit as embodied in the monastic life and the training of the monks and nuns. Some of the significant changes occurring in today’s Korean Buddhism will also be noted.
